Have Your Rankings Been Hit By The Latest Google Algorithm Change?
Penguin Update

Panda Update

Google is constantly making changes to its algoritm as it continues to improve its serach results. Last year, they introduced the update. Panda which was first released in February 2011. This change was aimed to lower the rank of “low-quality sites”, and return higher-quality sites near the top of the search results. According to sources, this change reportedly affected the rankings of almost 12 percent of all search results. Google’s Panda update has continued to receive several new updates since the original rollout in February 2011, with the effect going global in April 2011.

The penguin update was a new search algorithm that would target people who spam its search results or purposely do things to rank better that are against Google’s publishers guidelines.

Penguin Update

If your website rankings have fallen of late with little or no explanation, then it may be that your website has been hit by the Google’s latest algorithm update codenamed Penguin.   Google changes up their search ranking algorithms constantly to improve their search results and to cut down on spam, penalise duplicate content and generally eliminate weak websites from the first page.

This is a continual battle by Google to beat what is better known as Black Hat SEO artists and Google. The general idea behind Penguin is to crack down on underhanded backlinking techniques and reward strong sites by focusing more on content and less on SEO tricks.

So what did the Penguin update target?

Anchor text diversity and link relevancy are two key factors of Penguin, according to more early analysis. Here websites that overused anchor text aggressively for keywords they are trying to rank highly for will have seen their rankings drop. Early signs have seen the new algoritm change targeting websites that over use the same anchor text aggressively. Other areas that are being targeted include websites that have spammy link signals (paid text links using exact match anchor text, comment spam, guest posts on questionable sites, article marketing sites, and links from dangerous sites). Google has also hit websites for aggressive anchor text for keywords in backlinks which was even taking place before the Penguin update was released.

How can my website recover from the penguin update?

  • Improving your Link Authority is key

Link building has always been a major force in a website ranking high in the search engines. The major focus of Penguin is on backlinks and the manner in which websites get these links to help improve their PageRank. The Penguin update has now put much more of an emphasis on the reputation and quality of a websites link profile. The new algorithm update analyses  websites that are linking to your specific domain rather than the sheer number of links that point in your direction. Where many Black hat SEO techniques were about aquiring as many links as possible, now link authority which has always been important is much more critical now. Getting high page rank links that are also from websites related to your niche is an example of a good link profile. Such links carry much more weight as do government links and educational links.

Creating Remarkable Content

A major component in a successful inbound market strategy is great content. Content is the soul the web and when anyone searches the web for a specific search querie, they are always more likely to stay on your website, become a lead or purchase a service or product if they are to find what they are looking for. If you website does not have quality information for their particular search querrie, then they are unlikely to stick around. The new Penguin update incorporates Google’s latest research on Latent Semantic Indexing or LSI. As a result it is now harder to fool the search engine with generic, badly spun articles.

Penguin Rewards Natural Backlinks

Over the years many have tried to find short cuts to build natural backlinks. Google has continually conveyed its message that websites that have good content will attract links naturally. Reputable SEO experts know this to be one of the primary tactics of the industry. The new Penguin update rewards positive, honest linking practices that emlpoy mixed anchor text and good on-page optimisation rather than black hat SEO and over use of anchor text.  The new penguin update offers clients and SEO experts alike a level playing field  against spammers who resort to temporary gimmicks and black hat SEO techniques to pull in traffic.
